چکیده

A field study was designed to study several inorganic soil amendments as a substitute for sand in the top-dressing of an aerified, sandbased putting green. Several forms of natural zeolites, calcined clays, and diatomaceous earth were blended with sand and used to backfill aerification holes on a sand-based putting green. Several of these amendments enhanced turfgrass recovery and quality in this study, but many failed to perform as well as sand. The major chemical property of these amendments that was unique from sand was a high cation exchange capacity (CEC), which should facilitate nutrient retention. However, most of the products failed to meet the proper particle size distribution for inclusion in a U.S. Golf Association (USGA) green. Further study is needed to clarify the role of inorganic amendments in sand-based putting greens.

Effects of Mulching and Nitrogen on Soil Nitrate-N Distribution, Leaching and Nitrogen Use Efficiency of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Mulching and nitrogen are critical drivers of crop production for smallholders of the Loess Plateau in China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mulching and nitrogen fertilizer on the soil water content, soil nitrate-N content and vertical distribution in maize root-zone. The experiment was conducted over two consecutive years and used randomly assigned field plots with...

Influence of Humic Substances on Irrigation Frequency and Phosphate Absorption of Creeping Bentgrass Putting Greens

Humic substances (HS) reportedly enhance moisture retention of soil. However, no information is available as to the effects of HS on sand-based golf course putting greens. HS have acidic functional groups (COOH) that are reaction sites on the molecule. An greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect that the acidic functional groups in humic acid, tannic acid and citric acid have ...

Subsurface Drainage of Modern Putting Greens

Subsurface drainage involves both intensity and capacity attributes. Intensity of subsurface drainage refers to how rapidly a root zone drains. Capacity, on the other hand, refers to the extent of excess (gravitational) water removal from the root zone. Consequently, discussions of putting green drainage often become confused since the expression improved drainage can imply improved drainage ca...
